How to scorpion-proof your home

Six steps, in the order that keeps out the most scorpions. Do the easy ones yourself and call a company for the rest.

  1. Check the doors. Look for daylight under exterior and garage doors. Add door sweeps and replace worn weatherstripping and the garage door's bottom seal.
  2. Seal the weep screed. On stucco homes, the gap behind the metal strip at the base of the wall is a common way in. Have it sealed with a material that still lets moisture escape.
  3. Close up penetrations. Caulk around pipes, A/C lines, hose bibs and cable entries, inside and out.
  4. Screen the vents. Fit fine screen on attic, soffit, roof and dryer vents.
  5. Fix window screens. Repair torn screens and caulk gaps around window frames.
  6. Clean up the yard. Move rock piles, woodpiles and debris away from the house, trim plants off the walls, and fix leaks that draw insects.

Common questions

What's the fastest way to scorpion-proof a home?

Start with door sweeps and garage door seals, since doors are the most common way in. Then seal weep screeds, pipes and vents.

Do blacklights help?

Yes, for finding them. Scorpions glow under ultraviolet light, so a UV flashlight at night shows where they're hiding and coming in.
