Scorpion Myths That Waste Your Money

Short answer: The most common scorpion myths are that essential oils repel them, that one spray takes care of them, and that winter cold kills them. What actually works is closing the gaps they use, cutting down the insects they eat, and outdoor treatment where they're heavy.

Myth: Essential oils keep scorpions away

Lavender, peppermint and cedar sprays are popular, but there's little evidence they keep bark scorpions out of a house. They won't close the gap under the door.

Myth: One spray takes care of it

Bark scorpions hide in cracks and walls and can go a long time without eating, so they often avoid treated surfaces. Treatment helps over time, especially outdoors, but it works best alongside sealing.

Myth: Winter kills them

Scorpions slow down and hide in winter, often in groups inside walls and under debris. They come back out when nights warm up. Winter is actually the best time to seal.

Myth: The cat will take care of it

Cats hunt scorpions, but they get stung, and stung cats can get very sick.

Myth: Sticky traps solve the problem

Glue traps along walls catch some scorpions and show you where they're traveling. That makes them a good way to monitor, not a way to keep scorpions out.

What actually works

  1. Seal doors, the garage, weep screeds, pipe gaps and vents
  2. Cut down water, clutter and insects near the house
  3. Treat outdoors if you live near open desert
  4. Check with a blacklight to see if it's working

Common questions

Does diatomaceous earth kill scorpions?

It's sometimes used against insects, but it's not a reliable way to keep bark scorpions out. Sealing does more.

Do ultrasonic repellers work on scorpions?

There's little evidence they do. Spend the money on sealing.
